The Slovenian land ownership structure is characterised by the
predominantly small farm holdings. In contrast to other countries from
Central and Eastern Europe, the major part of agricultural land and
forests remained to be owned by individuals after the World War II.
According to preliminary results of the Census of Agriculture, carried out
in June 2000, in Slovenia there are 96,669 agricultural holdings and 132
agricultural enterprises (organized as legal bodies, mainly commercial
companies). The average size of utilised agricultural area of agricultural
holdings and agricultural enterprises is 4.8 and 220.7 hectares
respectively. Private farmers own about90% of agricultural land and
about 70% offorests. The share ofprivate agriculturalland andforests is
increasing due to still on-going process of restitution of nationalized
property according to the Act
