The Concept of Matrilineation
Matrilineal or matriliny sometimes designates “children belonging to the
mother’s group.” Murdock (1959) identifies the following features of a
matrilineal inheritance system in relation to the Thonga matriliny
community: avunculocal residence is customary in childhood. Boys and girls,
as soon as they are weaned, go to live in the village of their maternal uncle
