This research challenges the presupposition that possession
is the ultimate expression of consumer desire by comparing
consumers’ desires and values regarding both possession
and access (experience) in the art field. The findings
illustrate that contemporary art collectors and visitors
choose collection (possession) or visits (access) based on
different desires. Never having possessed any art objects,
visitors perceive unique values regarding their experiences.
The findings confirm, extend and challenge previous
research on possession, experiential approach, desire and
value.
