The premise of "diverse economies," rather than "the economy," can produce a radical ontological shift. This point has been forcefully elaborated by the participatory research projects of JK. Gibson-Graham (1996), exploring the effects of different representations in generating new economic possibilities inside communities. By surveying a diverse range of economic activities undertaken by community researchers inside communities in the US, Australia, and the Philippines, she produced the following (and evolving) geographical conceptual mapping that uncovered the multiplicity of transactions, labour relations, and enterprises hidden in mainstream economic discourses.
