LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND TIME PRESSURE IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING
Pius Ten Hacken
Consécutivité et Simultanéité

In LSP translation and interpreting, language processing mechanisms are used differently to their use in general communication. This difference can be expressed in the framework of Jackendoff's Parallel Architecture as a different way of using Conceptual Structure (CS). CS is not a level of linguistic representation, but a representation of knowledge of the world having interfaces with language and other cognitive components. By means of their translation skills, professional translators manage to produce a target text that enables the readers to build up a richer CS than the translator. Due to the additional time pressure, this effect is even stronger in interpreting. [→ Parallel Architecture; pragmatic competence; Conceptual Structure; communication; bilingual language processing]
