Revisionist history is a recurring preoccupation in reggae/dancehall poetics. Contesting Eurocentric narratives that relegate blackness to the margins of Caribbean history, reggae singers and dancehall DJs affirm the potency of music as a weapon of resistance against imperialist ideologies. So, for example, Bob Marley deploys the vivid image of the beating drum to define reggae music as an instrument of liberation in his anthemic "One Drop," from the Survival album:
So feel this drum beat
As it beats within
Playing a rhythm
Resisting against the system.
