Indispensable reference book on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Africa South of the Sahara and their negative impact on African societies. A very well-researched, detailed analysis of the disastrous coupling of small arms trafficking and political violence, the text is supported with ample field data and first-hand surveys. The book illustrates the fact that the sheer volume of the illegal small arms can turn them into a major catalyst and multiplier of conflicts, human rights violations, economic disruptions, and major humanitarian crises. It is not just a technical reference book or a collection of primary data and facts - the author also dwells on the legacies of the Cold War rivalries in sub-Saharan Africa (among other initial sources of arms proliferation), and the subsequent numerous internal conflicts, coups, expansion of armed militias. It is written not just with scientific precision, but also with compassion and concern for the plight of the man in the street, the villager, the person displaced by ethnic conflicts, human rights violations, and political unrest. As a former European diplomat who has worked in both French and English speaking African countries, I wish this book were translated and published in English - important as it already is in its original French, it will certainly double - at least - its audience in English. Excellent work.
